Be welcome back everyone.

The mask shortage during this coronavirus pandemic can be overwhelming.

One local woman saw the need and is making them from her own home..

Wtva's erin wilson joins us with this weeks hometown hero..

It won't keep down covid-19 but sometimes it just makes people feel better that they've got one to wear."

Verna hampton lost her job a month ago.

It won't keep down covid-19 but sometimes it just makes people feel it won't keep down covid-19 but sometimes it just makes people feel better that they've got one to wear."

Verna hampton lost her job a month ago.

She quickly joined a friend making masks for local nursing homes and hospitals..

And now her homemade masks are in high demand... "one person told this person and told this person and it just went wild."

But hampton makes the masks for free.

She says it's not about the money but to help people in her community feel hopeful and safe..

"it keeps me from feeling helpless and maybe i can help somebody if nothing else make them feel better that they've got a mask."

Now people in the community are calling hampton a hero but she feels differently... "i'm very honored but i don't feel like a hero.

I'm just doing what i can to help others.

There are so many people who are really the heros.

The nurses, the doctors, our truck drivers, pharmacist, the people having to work at our local stores to keep us going.

Those are the hero they're out here everyday putting their lives at risk."

But hampton's effort to help healthcare workers is now helping her entire community..

Erin wilson wtva 9 news and that was wtva's erin wilson reporting.

Many others are stepping up to help out those in need.
