Along with added recognition... the city will also enjoy a financial gain from the designation.

Here in nettleton, businesses are excited abiut the new grant money because they expect it to mean more business for them.

"a lot of our downtown is outdated."

City clerk and main street director dana burcham said the city of nettleton needs some maintenance.

Since nettleton has been named a mississippi main street community, she said it will now receive grants to help restore and build up its downtown area.

"i think having the knowledge from mississippi main street will be a big asset, because we do need some things done to our downtown area, and having their staff is going to be a tremendous help."

Burcham said she expects new life to come to nettleton once it gets built up.

She said the coronavirus has had lasting impacts on businesses around the town, but they've been able to reopen and seem to be doing quite well.

"a few of our, like hair salons, and stuff, it did have an impact on them, they had to close down, of course they lost some business doing that, but they're up at full force now, so everything seems to be going pretty smooth."

Burcham said she fully expects new businesses to give even more life to the town.

One local business owner said her salon is doing fine.

"it was very hard at first, and we were shut down for 5 weeks during that time, because that barber shop and hair salons were shut down, we've opened back up with restrictions, you know, with the executive order."

Julie raper is the owner of shorty's style shop and boutique.

She said she thinks the money for city maintenance will be a wonderful thing for nettleton.

"i think it's going to bring more businesses, which more businesses bless others."

"we'r all about nettleton, and i think it's going to really help."

Burcham said giving the downtown a facelift will make it more attractive to new businesses, like the one behind me here.

When they move in, this will increase foot traffic, which will help every business around nettleton.
