Church must acknowledge male domination, says Pope

Pope Francis says it's time for the Catholic Church to acknowledge its history of male authoritarianism and abuse of women.

On Tuesday (April 2) a 50-page "Apostolic Exhortation" was released addressing sexual abuse scandals and calls for women priests.

His words seemingly targeted at young people - saying it was for the "good of the Catholic Church" to repair its reputation - or risk becoming "a museum".

But despite admitting significant failings by the clergy, he added the Church quote "could not agree with everything some feminist groups propose" - a reference clearly aimed at the current Catholic ban on a female priesthood.

The pope is facing criticism over the Church's response to a decades-long clerical sexual abuse crisis, which has damaged its religious standing around the globe - and seen it pay billions in compensation.

The pontiff has dubbed the abuse a "tragedy", and asked young people to support the Church in "this dark moment." He's previously acknowledged that the church must win back many young people who see it as insignificant.
