Hospital CEO stresses importance of wearing masks

The madison county commission chairman plans to meet with healthcare professionals this week to figure out if a mask ordinance is necessary.

Sierra, what could the chairman hear from those healthcare leaders?

Commission chairman dale strong will probably hear what huntsville hospital c-e-o david spillers told us.

He says a mask ordinance is needed right now but knows it will be hard to enforce.

Spillers says they've seen that difficulty first hand when visitors refuse to wear masks inside their facilities.

According to spillers, face coverings reduce your risk of catching the virus and misinformation is leading people believe otherwise.

"i don't know when wearing face coverings became a political statement, and i'm sorry it has.

It hasn't got anything to do with that.

It's just an effective way to keep people from transmitting the disease."

If the data and healthcare workers all agree a mask ordinance is needed, chairman strong says he would look at passing a resolution at a commission meeting.

He said he would need the support of the madison county sheriff to enforce it.
