They're creating masks and shields for employees in hospitals.

Here's how they do it.

A chico based company called idea fab labs wants to protect people on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

"we're producing both fabric face masks and also plastic face shields" erin banwell is the director.

"right now we're doing 700 a day" (nats: laser cutter) this laser machine cuts fabric for the masks.

(nats: man operating machine) this machine cuts the plastic to make the shields.

(nats: laser cutter closing) this is all a part of the assembly line.

(standup:) so what are some of the steps here at the assembly line?

One of them involves cutting nylon chords in order to make the fabric masks.

Another step involves actually assembling the face shields.

(nats) the company - usually a hub for people to use their high tech tools.

But they got a call to change their business model if you would like to help -- idea fab labs is looking to hire sewers who can make those masks -- from home.
