The city of Chico is now feeling the financial impact of virtual classes at Chico State as many students take classes from home.

Of chico is now feeling the financial impact of virtual classes at chico state..

As many students take classes from home..

How big of a hit is the city taking?

Action news now reporter jafet serrato is live in chico for us this morning... jafet you spoke with some city staff members..

What did you learn?

Debbie..

I learned the city could lose millions of dollars in sales due to chico state here being empty.

At last check... roughly 750 students are living in the chico state dorms right now... and 90 percent of classes are online.

And because of that... assistant city manager 'chris constantin' tells me... they are estimating the city to lose 50 to 60*millio* dollars in gross sales this year.

That means businesses around the downtown area who rely on foot traffic from students are not receiving as much cash flow.

<"it greatly concerns me because as business goes so goes the revenue for the city.

The city projected approximately a 600-thousand dollar reduction for our revenue for this year as a result to covid 19.

Specifically related to students out of the area."

Tha* projection you heard from scott dowell... spans from july of this year until the end of december.

It is not clear how many students live in apartments near the downtown area..

But sean murphy - the media relations coordinator for chico state..

Tells me roughly 10-thousand students returned to chico for the fall semester.
