MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Several pharmaceutical companies are preparing for their coronavirus vaccines to go through the FDA approval process.

Our top story tonight at 6... several companies developed what they say ... are effective vaccines for the coronavirus.

But they still need f-d-a approval.

41 nbc's ariel schiller spoke with local experts about what a vaccine approval means... for healthcare workers.

News of vaccines for the coronavirus has many people hoping the pandemic is almost over... but even if vaccines get approved by the f-d-a the director of macon bibb emergency management spencer hawkins says it could be months before it's distributed to the general public.

"this vaccine may not be available to the general public for several months at least for the general public and so we may be looking at another five, six, seven, eight months of restrictions."

The georgia department of health has a draft of a vaccine distribution plan but michael hokanson the public information officer with north central health district stresses that the plan is just that... a draft.

Once that plan has been approved by the cdc and every other federal agency that needs to have eyes on it and provide feedback and approve it once that draft has been finalized that will be the plan throughout the state of georgia.

The vaccination plan says the first groups of people to get the vaccine will include people most at risk of getting exposed to the virus but it could change depending on supply.
